Resilient Blooms: CNL celebrates the Environment through Art Installation

In a vibrant joining of nature, art, and technology, a new art installation has bloomed in the heart of the Port Hope community. Resilient Blooms is an outdoor interactive AR (augmented reality) public art exhibition, located in the historic downtown core of Port Hope. Originally developed by Critical Mass Art, a not-for-profit art organization in response to the Walton Street Reconstruction Project, elements of the exhibition will continue to be available for viewing after the construction activities are completed.

The installation was curated by artist Jessica Svenningson, who grew up in the Northumberland area. The installation features artwork of a variety of edible flowers grown locally in gardens and forests across Northumberland County, and the topic of the recently published horticultural cookbook Taste Buds, A Field Guide to Cooking and Baking with Flowers by Nikki Fotheringham.

Artwork originally created by Dana Harrison, an illustrator and artist based in Warkworth, for the cookbook was used as the inspiration for the pieces in Port Hope.

The augmented reality aspect of the installation allows viewers to learn more about the plant as well as folklore they inspire in a visually appealing way. To experience the Resilient Blooms AR elements, you will need to download the Artivive app. By hovering over the art display with the app open, each flower will come to life. To access recipes and learn more about each flower, scan the QR code next to the plant.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is proud to partner with the Municipality of Port Hope and the Heritage Business Improvement Area to encourage visitors to Port Hope. As environmental stewards, CNL is undertaking the cleanup and restoration of once-contaminated properties in Port Hope, providing an environmental solution for generations to come. This mandate fits with the desire to showcase the local environment.

Visit the installation in these locations and more: The Little Station, Walton Hotel (John St parking lot wall) and Brogden’s Lane on the wall beside Schuuz.  The Ganaraska Brewery, Lent’s Lane and Dr. Tucka’s Dental Office.
