In the early 1990s, the outdoor skating rink at the Caroline Street Park was upgraded. Radiological investigations at that time identified the presence of historic low-level radioactive waste, which was removed to meet a health criteria. Some residual contaminated soil was placed in an interim storage cell that was constructed beneath the parking lot.
The site has been monitored and meets the required criteria for public safety. During the upcoming PHAI cleanup, which applies more stringent criteria, the remaining historic low-level radioactive waste will be removed.
