In the last week of October, CNL with community and contract partners hosted an information session for residents of the Port Hope community. Participants were able to speak directly with General Manager, Scott Cameron about the status of Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) projects while getting answers to specific questions. The offered bus tours also provided an update on PHAI work already completed in the community, with details about the remaining tasks. The large sites slated for completion by 2026, means the bulk of the low-level radioactive waste from the Port Hope community will be in long-term safe storage.
Kids and adults of all ages enthusiastically played games of chance for prizes; explored big equipment on display like excavators, dump trucks and bobcats; while enjoying treats from well known local businesses – Jim’s Pizza, Dreamer’s Café, and Queenie’s Bake Shop, sponsored by contract partners.
The event dubbed “PHAI in the Fall” was a team effort with support from the Port Hope and District Chamber of Commerce as well as the Port Hope Heritage Business Improvement Area (HBIA) and CNL’s prime contractors, Bird, WSP and ECC.
“We created this opportunity to bring people together, support downtown businesses as well as showcase our projects,” said Shernette Muccuth Henry, Manager of Public Communications. “By getting information firsthand lots of concerns were addressed and misinformation corrected. It is key to share with the community how PHAI work is progressing,” Muccuth Henry added.
Attendees primarily had questions about the overall timeline of the project, when their individual properties would be completed as well as expressed interest in more information on the restoration work at the West Beach, Chemetron Lagoon and Lions Park.
Work at residential properties is expected to increase each year with over 120 private properties planned for cleanup next year and the work completed by 2030.
Feedback from participants has been very positive with the bus tour, the pumpkin judging contest, and the opportunity to meet staff and contractors identified as wins. CNL is already planning a community event next year.
